Newsweek: The 13 Most Useless College Majors (As Determined By Science)
Which jobs are used to project future growth for history majors? Because I can guarantee if it was “historians” or “history professors” then yes, job prospects look bleak. But since a history major can use those skills in nearly any profession, it seems hard to judge.
Useless is just a mean word. Sure this is a list of majors that do not guarantee short term prospects, financial success, or even a career path. I did not major in Medieval history and minor in Classics to become a millionaire. Few do. I decided that I wanted to enjoy my four years in college academically as well as socially. I love history. Always have, always will. There are inherent risks in majoring in a “liberal art” but we hold our own in debates.
And the other number floating around the interwebs today is that 53% of college graduates are unemployed or underemployed. Are all those 20-somethings members of the “useless majors”? Because if they’re not then how “useful” are useful majors?
By calling something useless it sends a message to graduates (as well as current and prospective students) with degrees in those thirteen fields that they actually wasted their time and money. I, for one, don’t regret a minute of the classes I took, or the time I spent learning about the Black Death, the history of Latin America, Alexander the Great or Chaucer.
But the trolling worked. The word “useless’ has garnered 3000+ notes on this post, including mine here….on Obit of the Day…a history Tumblr…by a history major. A history major who was taught how to think, write, and communicate effectively (thank you Franklin & Marshall College), which I think is pretty useful.
